Autoevolution Shows Shine of Bad Boy 2020 Silverado HD in New Gallery

Just a few months after the new generation Silverado HD was officially unveiled, Chevy has already begun proudly rolling the new model off of the assembly lines in Michigan at the Flint assembly plant. In preparation for the exciting market launch later this year, the bad boy of the truck world sure looks mean and brawny in this gallery from the folks at the Autoevolution blog. The coming Silverado is larger, powered by new engines, and features a heavily overhauled chassis and suspension. For just one year's revamping, it also comes with a staggering 52 increase in maximum towing power, bringing the level to a whopping 35,500 pounds.

Under the hood are two different powertrains, both powerful enough to keep the Silverado situated at the very top of the food chain in its wildly competitive segment. The first is the 6.6-liter gasoline V8 that is the standard offering, and pumps out 401 hp as well as 464 lb-ft of torque, when paired with the six-speed automatic transmission. Compared to what resided here before it, the engine has 11 percent more horsepower and 22 percent more torque. There is also the option of the 6.6- liter Duramax diesel V8, cranking out 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque, while coupled to the all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. This is the version that offers the staggering 35,500 lb towing capability on the Regular cab, two-wheel drive, DRW diesel models.

Chief engineer for the 2020 Silverado Jaclyn McQuad said in an official statement that “we set out to make the best HD trucks on the market, bar none”, as towing capabilities were increased across the line, and many other features such as 15 available camera views are present to make the trailering duty more convenient. As seen on the GM Authority blog, there are 6 expected lineups to choose from: Light Duty 1500, Heavy Duty 2500 HD, Heavy Duty 3500 HD, Medium Duty 4500 HD, Medium Duty 5500 HD, and Medium Duty 6500 HD.

It is not certain yet, but the potential addition of carbon fiber CarbonPro box and MultiPro tailgate from GMC Sierra may be present on the 2020 Silverado 1500. There were weight-saving measures in the frame as well as aluminum swing panels in the hood, doors, and tailgate that contributed to the 2020's lighter final numbers. There is a new box access step ahead of the wheel wells, improved CornerStep rear bumper, and roll-formed steel bed that's stronger than its predecessor. The current workhorse that is available offers so much, and has evolved over the years into what we love to tout as the most durable and trusty example of truck in existence. If this doesn't happen to be the year that you and your family or business are ready to make a new purchase, you may have your mind set on the 2020 that is coming soon. The GM Pressroom doled out the stats and all-around good news about the lineup, which will embody the strongest, most capable Silverado HD ever.

Max towing capability jumps by 52 percent, up to hefty 35,500 pounds. Chief engineer Jaclyn McQuaid claimed that “she set out to make the best HD trucks on the market, bar none,” and was excited about the class-leading towing technologies like 15 available camera views that make trailering easier, helping duties such as pulling a large cargo trailer or camper ready to take on the lake for the weekend. Built at the Flint assembly plant in Michigan, the 2020 Silverado HD is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor with a 5.2-inches larger wheelbase on Crew Cab models.

The standard engine is a new 6.6L V-8 gas using direct injection, making 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. That reflects an 11 percent increase in horsepower, and a 22 percent increase in peak torque, which ultimately provides the ability to brandish 18 percent more towing capability. There is also the legendary Duramax 6.6-L Turbo-Diesel V-8 engine, making 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, and paired perfectly with an all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Every single component between the transmission and the wheels have been upgraded, paving the way for a whopping 35,000 pound towing capability on Regular Cab, two-wheel drive, DRW, diesel models.

The Autotrac active two-speed transfer case on 4 x 4 models has the ability to electronically control “4 auto” mode, which allows the truck to shift between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive as road conditions are constantly changing. One of the absolute coolest and futuristic additives we have seen on trucks is present on the 2020 Silverado HD: the in-vehicle trailering system features 15 available camera views, and among them is a feature that shows a transparent view of the trailer itself. There are also an easy-access engine block heater outlet, easy-to-fill diesel exhaust fluid tank with opening inside the fuel door, a much more integrated snow plow prep package, and the Bed Step feature: this makes it easier to reach and load items in the cargo box, which is designed to hold up to 500 pounds.

The foundation for the new truck is an enhanced version of the Silverado HD's sturdy, proven ladder-frame design, sporting boxed rails that allow for more strength. We are also proud that these new models incoming next year have yet another first within the industry: It is the only lineup in existence offering a VIN-specific Trailering Information Label, that clearly lists the trucks' vital metrics such as curb weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combined weight rating, max payload, max tongue weight, gross axle weight rating, and gooseneck ratings.
