The Desert Boss Is Back: The 2027 Chevy Colorado Gets Its Off-Road Swagger Back

2027 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Chevrolet is bringing back a familiar name for drivers who love rugged trucks and off-road adventures. The 2027 Chevrolet Colorado will revive the Desert Boss Special Edition, giving the midsize pickup's adventure-ready lineup another exciting option.

Originally introduced for the 2023 model year, the Desert Boss package returns with a new approach. Rather than arriving as a factory-installed special edition, the 2027 version will be offered as a dealer-installed option. This gives Colorado ZR2 shoppers another way to personalize their truck with distinctive styling and specialized off-road equipment here at the Mid Missouri Powerhouse.

The returning package is part of a broader round of updates for the 2027 Colorado. Along with the Desert Boss nameplate, Chevrolet is introducing an updated TurboMax engine with increased horsepower and torque. Together, these changes give truck enthusiasts even more reasons to keep an eye on the next Colorado lineup.

The Desert Boss Returns for Another Round

The Desert Boss Special Edition originally made its debut with the third-generation Chevrolet Colorado in 2023. Its return for 2027 brings the package back into the spotlight for drivers who want their midsize truck to stand out on the trail and around town.

The revived package carries the RPO code PDK and will be available exclusively for the Colorado ZR2. As Chevrolet's off-road-focused trim, the ZR2 provides a natural foundation for a package centered on additional trail equipment, purposeful details, and rugged personality.

The 2027 Desert Boss package will be installed by the dealership rather than included as a factory-installed trim configuration. This type of option, commonly called an LPO, adds another personalization opportunity for eligible Colorado buyers.

Chevrolet has not yet released photos of the new Desert Boss package, so its complete appearance remains to be revealed. However, the announced equipment gives truck enthusiasts a preview of the features that will help distinguish this special edition.

Off-Road Hardware With a Purpose

The 2027 Colorado Desert Boss Special Edition combines several equipment packages and distinctive details designed to complement the ZR2's adventurous character.

Planned features include:

  • Off-Road Front Bumper Package: Adds specialized front-end equipment for the truck's rugged mission.

  • Off-Road Lighting Package: Provides additional lighting equipment for off-road adventures.

  • Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers: Adds specialized suspension hardware designed for demanding terrain.

  • Tech Bronze Recovery Hooks: Introduces a distinctive color accent to a functional off-road feature.

  • Front Fender Decal Package: Gives the truck additional exterior character.

  • Door Sill Plates: Adds a finishing touch to the cabin entry areas.

These additions bring together practical equipment and visual details. The lighting and bumper packages reinforce the truck's trail-focused design, while the bronze recovery hooks and fender graphics help give the Desert Boss its own identity.

The Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers are another notable part of the package. These dampers also appear on the more specialized Colorado ZR2 Bison, connecting the returning Desert Boss with hardware featured elsewhere in Chevrolet's off-road truck family.

For drivers who enjoy exploring remote trails, the combination of ZR2 capability and additional equipment makes the Desert Boss an appealing configuration to watch as more information becomes available.

How the Desert Boss Fits Into the Colorado Lineup

The 2027 Desert Boss package will be exclusive to the Colorado ZR2. It will not be available in combination with the ZR2 Bison Edition or the Midnight Edition.

This approach gives shoppers a clear distinction between several specialized Colorado configurations. The Desert Boss offers its own combination of equipment and styling, while the Bison and Midnight editions maintain their separate identities.

The original 2023 Desert Boss package established a recognizable look through a collection of upgrades. Its equipment included 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, an off-road front bumper, a bed-mounted sport bar, roof-mounted auxiliary lighting, unique graphics, and an underbody camera system.

That earlier package was offered for a single model year before Chevrolet discontinued it for 2024, when the ZR2 Bison Edition became another prominent option for off-road enthusiasts. The Desert Boss name is now set to return for 2027, marking its first comeback since that initial run.

Chevrolet has not confirmed that every feature from the original package will carry over to the new version. The announced 2027 equipment list provides the clearest picture of what buyers can expect so far, with additional details still to come.

TurboMax Power Gets an Upgrade for 2027

The returning Desert Boss package is not the only news for the 2027 Chevrolet Colorado. The midsize pickup is also scheduled to receive an updated version of its turbocharged 2.7-liter TurboMax gasoline engine.

The new engine carries the RPO code L4B and replaces the previous L3B version. Its output rises to 350 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, representing increases of 40 horsepower and 20 lb-ft over the outgoing engine.

Those gains give the TurboMax powertrain an even stronger set of performance figures. Torque is especially important in a pickup, helping deliver the pulling power that drivers value when hauling equipment, carrying gear, or tackling demanding work.

The updated engine will continue to pair with General Motors' eight-speed automatic transmission. This familiar transmission configuration remains part of the Colorado's powertrain package as Chevrolet introduces the engine revisions.

For truck shoppers, the powertrain update adds another reason to follow the 2027 model. Whether the priority is weekend recreation, daily driving, or getting equipment to a job site, the Colorado's updated engine specifications are an important part of the story.

A New Chapter for the Colorado's Off-Road Story

Chevrolet is giving the 2027 Colorado a combination of meaningful updates and familiar off-road character. The return of the Desert Boss Special Edition creates another personalization option for ZR2 buyers, while its announced equipment brings specialized dampers, off-road lighting, a front bumper package, and distinctive bronze recovery hooks into the mix.

The TurboMax engine update adds a performance highlight, with higher horsepower and torque figures scheduled for the new model year. Together, these developments reinforce the Colorado's appeal to drivers looking for a midsize pickup with a strong blend of capability and personality.

Production of the 2027 Chevrolet Colorado is scheduled to begin on October 19, 2026, at General Motors' Wentzville plant in Missouri. Additional information about the returning Desert Boss package, including photos and final availability details, is expected as the launch approaches.

GM Authority Spots 2023 Chevy Colorado Desert Boss in the Wild With “Borrowed Bison Goods”

We all enjoy being able to quickly check our phones or tablets to find out just about anything about a new or upcoming vehicle, and all of us here at the Mid Missouri Powerhouse get especially excited when we find spy shots for those vehicles! In a very interesting new development, GM Authority spy photographers snapped a Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss prototype being tested with, surprisingly, the beadlock wheels from the upcoming 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison.

The shots you can see here clearly show that the wheels of the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss match the ones that had originally been teased in the photos of the ZR2 Bison prototype just before its official debut. It is a bit hard to discern exactly why the ZR2 Desert Boss prototype was sporting the beadlocks and it may be that GM is taking the time to thoroughly test the wheel and tire combo before it places them on the online configurator and beyond.

One slight difference between the two sets of shots is that the Bison was wearing Goodyear Duratrac tires, while the spied prototype was hitting the pavement with Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT rubber. It could also be quite possible that the beadlock wheels may be a sweet add-on accessory option for the Standard ZR2, or even as a juicy component of the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2. The Desert Boss Special Edition package is an all-out banger for off-road enthusiasts, as its goodies leave you extremely well-prepped for any stream or boulder-strewn outing.

The package also steps things up a notch with an off-road front bumper complete with a safari bar, and a 40-inch roof off road light bar for illuminating summer Baja nights. Extras such as the tailgate and front Fender Decal Package step things up from entry-level ordinary, and the underbody camera alerts you to the many pitfalls (no, NOT like the 1980s video game!) that may spring up during the task. Ultimately, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison is expected to be an indirect replacement for the 2023 Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss.

The Bison sweeps confidently out of the gate with upgrades such as 3-inch LT315/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, long-travel Multimatic DSSV dampers, amazing hydraulic bump stops, and two inches of ground clearance above and beyond the standard ZR2. Engine duties are handled by the same powertrain (undoubtedly a good thing), with the 2.7-liter Inline-4 L3B Turbo High-Output gasoline engine cranking out 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The all-new Colorado will also quench the thirst that buyers have for the usefulness of the drive mode, with this model offering both the diverse Terrain and Baja settings to fine-tune your performance.

Unlike bed mounts on previous models, this one bolted the spare to an upright at the back of the cab, which frees up more space for cargo. We firmly believe that “to adventure is the human condition”, and one constant principle over the cycle of humanity is the need to roam. It has been so incredibly exciting to watch these rock-crawling machines find and keep their way within the current market, as everyone getting out of the city for the weekend have come in droves for the truck. We will keep you posted right here on the blog about any more sightings and updates regarding the Colorado, and all the other vehicles here at the Powerhouse that are primed for the alluring adventure and fun of the summer!
